The Missing Link: Teeth, Airway, Sleep & Hyperactivity
There is a growing area of research in the orthodontic profession surrounding the link between dental issues, airway, attention and hyperactivity in children.
If your child has issues with snoring, mouth breathing, trouble waking up in the morning, or being very tired after waking up, or if he or she is struggling to pay attention throughout the day, there’s a chance he or she child could have an undiagnosed airway issue.
A Closer Look At The Numbers
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 11 percent of all children in the U.S. aged 4-17 have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADHD or ADD). That was roughly 6.1 million American children in 2016.
This is comparable with the 15% of children that have been diagnosed with some form of sleep-disordered breathing.
However, 90 percent of children that have sleep-disordered breathing go undiagnosed — often because symptoms are misattributed to psychological or emotional issues (American Osteopathic Association).
The American Sleep Apnea Association suggests that as many as 25% of the children who have been diagnosed with ADHD may actually have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, and that much of their learning difficulty and behavior problems can be the consequence of an underlying airway problem (Alaska Sleep Education Center).
So, What Does That Mean for Orthodontics?
Issues with teeth like crowding, narrow arches, crossbite and deepbite can actually contribute to airway problems. With our state-of-the-art iCat CBCT machine, we can take a 3D image of the head that shows us 1000x more information than a basic panoramic x-ray (which is the standard diagnostic tool in orthodontics).
In addition, our iCat uses significantly lower amounts of radiation. Taking and evaluating this 3D image is part of our complimentary initial consultation, and our doctors and team use this comprehensive approach from the very start (American Osteopathic Association).
Utilizing this technology, we are able to prescribe the best treatment for you or your child to have maximum impact on improving dental, airway, attention, and activity issues. With the knowledge of our doctors and the help of some of our amazing technology, we are often the first ones to notice an airway issue in children. We work closely with other sleep specialists and ear, nose and throat specialists as needed to collaborate and develop a comprehensive approach that you can only get here at Kozlowski Orthodontics.
