10 Reasons We Don't Use Color Bands on Braces

Why Mouthguards?

We always recommend that kids “play it safe” and consistently wear mouthguards whether it is required for the sport or not. Anyone, including children with braces, who participates in a sport that carries a risk of contact to the face or head should wear a mouthguard. We want to ensure that our patients, and their teammates, are properly protected from sports-related injuries to the jaw and mouth. These injuries can become costly as they may require a lifetime of repair and maintenance. Additionally, and possibly most importantly, mouthguards provide the wearer protection against concussion.

Sports Safety Facts

Despite all the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouthguards and facial protection during sporting competitions and practices. Injuries can happen at any age or skill level and occur no matter what sport you are engaging in. It is important for parents, coaches, and athletes to understand the prevalence of sports injuries and know that many sports injuries can be reduced or prevented by wearing the proper protective gear – including a mouthguard. Custom-fit mouthguards have been found to protect against concussion twice as well as store-bought mouthguards.

Our Mouthguard Program

Our mouthguard program is a non-profit, community service created to protect the smiles of children in Southeastern Connecticut. The goal of the program is to reduce the risk of injury during athletic competition to the teeth, mouth, and head by offering a professionally fabricated custom-made mouthguard. Wearing a mouthguard has also been proven to reduce the risk of concussion. We offer custom mouthguards to kids and adults of all ages whether or not they are a patient of Kozlowski Orthodontics. If you are a coach or part of one of our local sports associations please feel free to contact the office to learn more about custom mouthguards for your entire team.
